▼   How does my credit transfer and how many credits can I transfer to USA?

The University of South Alabama transfer credit policy is designed to facilitate the transfer of students and their coursework from one college or university to another, assure the maximum utilization of work accomplished at another institution, and encourage students to advance toward graduation in four years.

The University of South Alabama accepts transfer work from regionally accredited post-secondary institutions. Incoming transfer coursework will be evaluated against the University of South Alabama bulletin in effect for the semester and year in which the student enrolls at the University. A University of South Alabama equivalent course, disciplinary elective or general elective will be assigned based on comparability of the course content.

Use our interactive tool, the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) to  assess which credits may transfer to USA. It is important to keep in mind that the TES is an unofficial course evaluation. USA will make an official determination of transfer credit acceptance after you are admitted to the university and official transcripts for all of your previously completed coursework have been received.

You can also use the Alabama Transfers guides to determine what classes may transfer to USA.

Additional Resources:

No more than a combined total of 25% of the total credits required for the degree will be allowed through alternative methods (AP, CLEP etc...)

Amount of Credit Hours that can Transfer:

Transferring from a 2-year community college:
Only one-half of the credit hours required for a degree may be transferred from a community college. To view the official policy, please click on the USA Bulletin.

Transferring from a 4-year college:
A candidate for graduation must complete a minimum of 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction offered by the University of South Alabama in upper-division coursework (300 and 400 levels).
Minors: There is also a minimum number of semester hours that must be completed in the major and minor at the University of South Alabama
To view the official policy, please click on the USA Bulletin.
▼   Orientation

All new students must attend Transfer Orientation. We offer virtual and in-person experiences. Orientation will present you with information on the resources available to you at the University of South Alabama.

Those who need to attend Transfer Orientation:

  • if you're transferring from another institution to complete your degree
  • if you are 23 years of age or older and have not yet attended college
  • if you are seeking a second bachelor’s degree

Those who do not attend Transfer Orientation:

  • Transient and non-degree seeking students are not required to attend orientation, but can opt to do so
  • First-year freshmen (under the age of 23) should register for a Freshman Orientation session

Once you've registered for Orientation, your name will appear on our Advising Dashboard and you will be contacted to schedule your advising and class registration appointment. All communications will go to your South Alabama email. To learn more about when class registration opens for new students, please review USA's Academic Calendar.

▼   Reverse Transfer

Alabama Community Colleges

The University of South Alabama is a participant in the Reverse Transfer system with the National Student Clearinghouse. Reverse Transfer is for students who transferred to the University of South Alabama from a two-year institution prior to completing an Associate’s degree. The University of South Alabama credits are transferred back to the two-year institution for evaluation and determination of eligibility for an Associate’s degree.

Incoming students consent to the transmission of their University of South Alabama record during the transfer admission application process.

Not all two-year institutions participate in Reverse Transfer; however, many do such as those in the Alabama Community College system. It is solely the responsibility of the two-year institution to evaluate the student’s record and determine the student’s eligibility for the Associate’s degree. Students should contact the two-year institution directly with questions regarding eligibility, award dates, deadlines for receipt of degree, any associated fees, etc.

Other Partnerships

The University of South Alabama has Reverse Transfer agreements with Bishop State College, Coastal Alabama Community College, Jones College, Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Northwest Florida State College and Pensacola State College.

Students who have questions about Reverse Transfer should contact the Office of the Registrar.
